Rock Bottom

I hit a seven day zero yesterday but I can't blame it on the Achilles which seems to be ok. I got 5 miles in this morning to shake things loose and I felt fine.

5 miles @ 8:29 pace.

Andrew, I don't like that tone at all! If the achilles is OK then I think you'll be just fine. You have had many weeks of simply terrific training. Chin up!!

No need to lay blame...you haven't lost anything. Keep on shakin' things loose and you'll be back into it in no time - you know the routine.

In the meantime, it looks as though I'm going to have to bring a bottle (or two) of red over some weekend soon.

I wouldn't call it "rock bottom", but rather some well needed recovery and rest time. A chance to heal up all the nagging little issues and get yourself ready to get back at it hard.

Marathon champ Eric send me Noakes' "Lore of Running" book some time ago, but it's only recently that I've really dug into some of the most valuable chapters. Chapter 7, "Avoiding Overtraining" has been pretty illuminating and might be worth a read.

Now I'm not saying you're currently overtraining here, but the book does speak highly of the effects of real rest when "the plods" come along and won't leave.

We know you'll be fine and I'm sure you do too. Soon enough you'll be moving forward again.

This has to be the first intervention I've ever heard of where someone needs to *bring* you some alcohol instead of take it away!

You're going to be just fine. There may be a bit of overtraining, or maybe just overthinking, that you will have to own up to and look in the eye.

You've been fighting for a long time, and there is certainly a toll that takes on a person mentally as well as physically. It might be time to recharge. You'll figure it out. Cheers!
